Day 4

In Day 4 of our class, I would like to show you how to make performance-based rubrics using two different websites: Rubistar and Teacher Rubric Maker. It only takes about 5 minutes!
________________________________________________________________

I would also like to show you LanguageGuide which is an interactive picture dictionary. You first have to choose English from a list of different languages and then pick from a list of various instructional topics to learn from such as body parts, home, and animals.
________________________________________________________________

The last site I would like to talk about is Free ESL Flashcards which is a website where you can download free English flashcards which you can use in your classrooms.

Day 3

Today, I would first like to show you a few video websites that you can use in your ESL classrooms. These sites are good because they usually have transcripts and quizzes after the videos. The first one is ESL Videos, the second one is Lingual.Net
_________________________________________________________________

The rest of the websites, I will show you today focus more on sentence structure and vocabulary.

The first one is called PicLits where your students have to describe a picture by dragging words, phrases, and sentences on to it to make slogans or advertisements. Here is an example of something you can make on this site:
PicLit from PicLits.com
See the full PicLit at PicLits.com

Another great site is WordSift which is a place where you can insert (paste) text but this time it sorts the vocabulary from the most common to the least common. You can also click on any of the vocabulary to see pictures of that words and examples of that word used in sentences.
________________________________________________________________
One of the best early phonics/reading websites for children which I've found is called Starfall. This interactive site teaches everything from the sounds of all the individual letters in the alphabet to how to read words with both short and long vowel sounds. It has a bunch of storybooks at the higher levels where kids can listen as they read along, plus a lot of interactive games which introduce a lot of vocabulary.

Other good sites for introductory phonics/reading are MeeGenius Library where you can listen to and personalize children's stories, Bitesize which has a lot of interactive literacy games and Word Builder where you can build words!

Day 2

The first website I would like to show you today is called Wordle which you can easily use for the Interpretational Mode of Communication.

On this site, you can paste some text and then create a word web which introduces the main vocabulary of what you will be talking about in class. The students will then have figure out what the main topic is.

For example, I made the following wordle from the text that I will be using in your TESOL class at Cheongnam:

Wordle: TESOL

How many terms you are familiar with and how many are you not familiar with?

Wordle can be used for a lot of other ways. You could have each of your students make a wordle based on a paper they just wrote and then have them print it and ask other students to figure out what their topic is. Another idea is for the teacher to make all the wordles and then have the students try to find their wordle.

Outside the classroom, I think this could also be useful at a teacher's meeting to highlight what topics will be discussed.

A second site you can use for the Interpretational Mode of communication is called Flickriver. As an introductory activity, you can have your students look at a 'river' of pictures and try to guess what the topic of the class will be. Another way to use this site, is to get your students to explain what is happening in each of the pictures and explain how they are connected to the main topic.
_________________________________________________________________
My next two websites are a great way to get your students interested in digital-story-telling. On My StoryMaker, students can choose their own characters, and go on great adventures but they have to create the story as they go along which is good for their interpretive skills. On Zimmer Twins your students can again be very creative but this time they can make their own cool movies based on their stories!
_________________________________________________________________
My fifth website is the best one I've found for TPR which has a list of basic commands and actions that go along with the pictures. If you have the students use this website, make sure to have them do the physical actions as they work on the exercises.

Day 1

Oddcast PoweredCreate Your Own

Welcome to my Blog!

I will be using this blogging website to teach you about interesting ways you can use technology in your ESL classes. Using a blog for Tech Corner is much easier than my Moodle website because it is more convenient to 'embed' things and also 'link' to other useful websites.

In our first class, I would like to talk to you about Moodle which I will also be using a lot in class. Moodle is the main reason why I first became interested in integrating technology into my ESL classes because before that I thought it was too difficult. The moodle software is designed for teachers and it has been translated into many different languages so you could easily use it in your classes too! You can find a lot of information about Moodle and other Web2.0 tools by watching the following instructional videos.

The next cool thing I would like to show you is Prezi which is a very easy and cool way to do presentations. I think it is way better than PowerPoint because you can use it like a sketchpad which is more creative. What better way to show you Prezi than to show you a presentation about my family. Enjoy!
